Developed in southwestern Scotland during the mid 18th century and was bred to pull heavy loads. The Clydesdale is an intelligent, even-tempered draft horse. It was develop in the 1700s in Lanark, Scotland, by farmers who needed powerful animals to haul heavy loads The Clydesdale, named for the River Clyde, is noted for its beauty. It has feathers (long hair) on the legs, an attractive head, and an active manner, and high-stepping. It weights up to 909 kg (2,000 lb) and is 17 to 18 hands (173-18 cm/68-72 in) tall. The Clydesdale is usually dark brown or bay with white markings.
